Down from the White House: Bush Signs K.I.D.S. Act into Law

From Press Secretary Dana Perino:

On Monday, October 13, 2008, the President signed the following bills into law:

S. 431, the "Keeping the Internet Devoid of Sexual Predators Act of 2008" or the "KIDS Act of 2008," which requires sex offenders to provide Internet identifiers, including e-mail addresses, to State sex offender registries; and tasks the Justice Department to establish and maintain a system that allows social networking websites to compare Internet identifiers of its users with those provided to the National Sex Offender Registry;

Here we go again! Another broadly applied federal law that recognizes no distinction between active pedophiles and all the other kinds of sex offenders there are, former or otherwise. I read a number of articles and editorials from respected sources on why the K.I.D.S. Act was a really bad idea. I just don't understand where Bush gets his information.

    Don't you find it odd that Joe Biden gets on Oprah lamenting the FBI "knows" where 400,000 CP distributors are but only has roughly $15 million to combat them, yet $150 million was given to the US Marshals (slipped in the $700 billion bailout package) to investigate whether sex offenders are registering their correct addresses? Yeah, they passed the "PROTECT Act" (in a desperate ploy to show they aren't lame ducks), but while voting to pump $360 million over five years into grants and programs to combat CP (and ironically, a posthumous study to see whether they are even effective), they stated there may not be any money to fund the KIDS Act. Weird huh?

  2. Indeed, Fallen One. Thanks for the info and welcome to MonsterMart. The KIDS Act looks like another mess of problems on top of the mess of problems already happening with other Federal SO Laws, including the Adam Walsh Act. I've read that some states have now realized the programs the AWA is demanding be implemented by July 2009 will cost them far more than the money the AWA is threatening to withhold if they don't.
    I sure hope the next administration does more THINKing than ACTing.
